Proud to be GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER is not only the motto of the conference, is the expression of a future career, full of challenges and also achievements.

Topics

According to the “guidelines for organizing Young Geotechnical Engineers’ Conferences” there is no specific theme for the conference. The participants are invited to present their researches made in the field Geotechnical Engineering. It is also encouraged the idea to present, not the final results of the researches, but the early stages of it with the difficulties met and the way that is intended to be solved. All the participants have to publish a paper and present it.

About

The conference will take place in Sibiu, also known as Hermannstadt, a beautiful old city from Transylvania, the European Capital of Culture for the year 2007, Europe's 8th most idyllic place to live (ranked by Forbes).

The conference will be held at Hotel Ibis Sibiu, in the very center of the city. The accommodation for the delegates, the welcome reception, the breakfasts, the lunches and the conference sessions will take place in Hotel Ibis Sibiu.

The official language of the conference is English.

Technical visit

The technical visit will be on Transfagarasan, one of the most beautiful roads in the world, with a length of approximate 90 km, built in 1970 - 1974. The road crosses the Carpathian Mountains in the highest section, the Fagaras Mountains, connecting the historic regions Transylvania and Wallachia.

Stores

Here are some prices that you can use as guidelines for the cost of life in Romania:

  • Beer (bottle): 2,00 to 3,00 € in a pub, about 1 € in store.
  • Pizza: from 6,50 €
  • Coke/Pepsi (0.50 liter bottle): 1,50 €, about 0,65 € in store.
  • Bottle of decent wine: from 6 €
  • Pack of cigarettes (Dunhill): 3,60 €

Stores are usually open from 8:00 to 20:00. Malls and superstores are open until 21:00 or even later.
Romania's currency is Leu (plural "Lei", pronunciation: lay, abbreviation: RON). Most stores accept major credit cards including AMERICAN EXPRESS, MASTER CARD and VISA.

Post offices display a postal horn symbol and the word Posta.

The conference will take place in the beautiful city of Sibiu, which is one of the most important destinations in Romania. Sibiu is full of culture, history and presents a warm welcome to the visitor. It is easily accessible from other locations by train, bus or plane.

Information about visitor visas and what a person needs to apply, is available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site. Please remember that it is your responsibility to obtain the visa in good time. If you require a letter of invitation, you may contact the conference organisation.

Transportation to Sibiu city

By plane

The easiest way to reach the conference venue is by airplane to Sibiu International Airport.

Nearby airports are Avram Iancu Airport Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) (180km) and Henri Coandă International Airport, Bucharest - Otopeni (OTP) (290 km).

Airlines operating on Sibiu International Airport are:
  • Austiran Airlines - with 1 flight/day to/from Vienna
  • Lufthansa and Tarom - with 3 flights/day to/from Munchen
  • Wizz Air - with 3 flights/week to/from Dortmund and London
  • Blue Air - with 3 flights/week to/from Stuttgart

To travel from the airport to Hotel Ibis Sibiu, there is a bus station in front of the airport and bus 11 should be taken and get off at the 9th station, called "Cofetaria Aida". The hotel is 200 meters back, on the left side. Tickets can be bought from the dispenser placed near the station, but Romanian money are needed. The ticket price is about 0.35 EUR (www.tursib.ro).

The distance from the airport cu Hotel Ibis Sibiu is about 5 km and most of the local taxis have a price of about 0.4 EUR/km (which is written on the door of the taxi).

In case of arrival to Cluj-Napoca, you can choose as travel options from Cluj-Napoca to Sibiu:
  • A taxi, with local companies (the price is about 80euros/travel)
  • A bus, reached from the inter-regional bus station, aprox. 11km from the airport (the price is about 10euros/travel)

  • Get from the Airport Otopeni the Express Line 783 Bus or 449 Bus for 9 stations until the station „Casa Presei”, then get the Express Line 780 for 2 station until you reach the Bucharest Railway Station called „Gara de Nord” (estimated time 50 minutes).
  • From the Bucharest Railway Station you go to Sibiu Railway Station (estimated time 6 hours).
  • From Sibiu Central Railway Station get the bus 2 or 1 until the Ibis Hotel (estimated time 15 min). Total estimated time 8 hours.

By car

Sibiu can be reached by car on the European Route E60 – E68. The major Romanian cities along E60 are: Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureş, Braşov, Ploieşti, Bucharest (Bucureşti) and Constanţa.

The conference fee is:

  • Nominated delegates: 350 EUR
  • Non-nominated delegates: 400 EUR
  • To register for this conference you should contact the member society of ISSMGE in your country.
    The following restrictions apply:
    Only European member societies can nominate participants
    The maximum number of participants per country is 2
    The participant should be younger than 35 years on the day the conference starts.

    Withdrawal / Cancellation policy

    Withdrawal will be accepted only up to 30 days prior to the event and a 30% penalty will be levied at the time.

All participants must submit a paper and deliver an oral presentation of 8-10 minutes.

The organising committee invited several geotechnical engineering professionals to deliver keynote and invited lectures.

The official language of the conference is English.
